This past August we observed a posting on a web-based bulletin board for
Respiratory Care Practitioners by a Therapist searching for a solution
to a homebound patient who was very dependent on high flow oxygen.
They had sent a young patient with heart and lung disease home on a standard
reservoir mask, as he required high FiO2 to raise his SpO2 from 60's on
cannula to mid to high 80's on high FiO2. The problem was that 20+ LPM
of flow taxes any home delivery system. He had three liquid O2 vessels
and two liquid O2 porta-packs. He could get around the house but his
parents could not take him farther than the front yard at his home.
His porta-packs tended to freeze up at the 15 LPM maximal flow rate
and provided <30 minutes therapy.
We contacted the Therapist and offered to send him our new Hi-Ox80,
High FiO2 Oxygen Mask. It worked so well that an oxygen flow of
6 LPM gave the same results as the 20-30 LPM standard reservoir
mask. He attended church without incident, able to leave the house
for 2-3 hours for the first time since discharge in March.
In a letter from the patient's parents, they wrote, "We are writing
to give our thanks for supplying the prototype oxygen masks for our
son, through this Therapist. Our lives have been totally turned
around because of the research and development your company has
done on oxygen masks. Since we received the masks, his life has
returned to near normal. We are SO grateful for the development
of this mask and what it has done for him. He has been able to
drop from 21 l/m using a mask and cannula, to 6 l/m with this new mask.
He is now able to go to church with us, to the lake and on the pontoon
boat, out to eat, shopping, and now is even going to return to school -
something that previously would have been impossible."
